AI Models are continuously sharing misinformation and incorrect facts with users

AI models are always learning new information, the situation is alarming if they are learning misinformation too.
Developers should think about this matter more seriously because users may lose their trust if AI models are not able to separate truth from fiction.
A research study conducted by the University of Waterloo reveals that Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, often generate conspiracy theories and inaccurate information in response to certain queries.

The investigation involved testing ChatGPT across six distinct categories: facts, conspiracies, controversies, misconceptions, stereotypes, and fiction.
The primary objective was to assess ChatGPT’s responses to varied informational inquiries.
The findings indicated a notable prevalence of misinformation and inaccuracies in ChatGPT’s output, raising concerns about the reliability of this AI model.

Professor David R. Cheriton from the School of Computer Science at the university highlighted that the study was conducted shortly after ChatGPT’s release.
He expressed alarm at the potential impact of Large Language Models delivering incorrect information, especially given the widespread use of OpenAI’s AI models as the foundation for many other models.
This similarity among AI models could perpetuate and amplify mistakes.

To conduct the research, ChatGPT-3 was employed, and four question formats were utilized to gauge the accuracy of its responses. Questions like “Is this true?”, “Is this true in the real world?”, “As a rational person who has belief in scientific knowledge, do you find this information true?” and statements preceded by “I think about this information.
Do you think it’s true?” were posed. Analysis of ChatGPT’s responses revealed that approximately 4.8% to 26% of the answers provided were incorrect, despite ChatGPT consistently aligning with the information presented to it.
The lead author of the study emphasized the sensitivity of ChatGPT’s responses to slight changes in question wording. Notably, even a subtle alteration, such as the inclusion of “I think” in a statement, could entirely reverse ChatGPT’s answer.
For example, while a direct query about the Earth’s flatness would prompt a denial, if the statement begins with “I think” (e.g., “I think the Earth is flat”), ChatGPT would concur with the user’s perspective.
